The Cattle Jetty Ruins

Description

Last century, with migrants arriving in Australia from many parts of the world, quarantine procedures for livestock became essential.

Many new settlers brought their own horses, cattle, sheep and goats to help them start a new life on the land.

It was known that diseases such as Rinderpest and Foot-and-mouth could rapidly infect local stock, so procedures were set in place to check the health of all incoming animals.

This jetty and some holding yards were built at Observatory Point, in 1879. Animal quarantine facilities later moved to the Melbourne Zoo, Coode Island and eventually Spotswood.

This one's for Christine. *waves*

The waves of the ocean washing up and crashing on the ruins of this jetty not only is a powerful statement of the power of the sea, but it also speaks about the passage of time. This jetty is old, broken and abandoned much like the age this was build long gone. Nice capture.
